"Surgery Choices for Women with Early-Stage Breast Cancer"
is a new booklet to help patients understand their breast cancer surgery options and to aid in the decision-making process. The booklet was developed through a partnership between the National Cancer Institutes (NCIs) Office Education and Special Initiatives, the National Research Center for Women & Families, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Offices of Womens Health at the NCI and the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Office of Research on Womens Health at NIH.
The booklet explains different surgery choices so that women can weigh the pros and cons of each. Included is a "Compare Your Choices" chart, which helps women compare surgery choices based on multiple factors including surgery side effects, additional treatments, and the chance of cancer recurrence for each surgery type. To order free copies, call 1-800-4-CANCER or visit www.cancer.gov/publications. View the booklet online at http://cancer.gov/cancertopics/breast-cancer-surgery-choices.
